چکیده
A. Background: Fitch & Hauser (2004; see also Hauser, Chomsky & Fitch 2002:1578 and O’Donnell, Hauser & Fitch 2005) claim tamarins can learn finite-state (FS) string patterns but not context-free (CF), while humans can learn both. Liberman (2004, 2006) suggests alternative explanations. Perruchet & Rey (forthcoming) disagree about humans. Gentner (2006) suggests starlings can learn strictly CF patterns.

Modeling and Evaluation of Stochastic Discrete-Event Systems with RayLang Formalism
In recent years, formal methods have been used as an important tool for performance evaluation and verification of a wide range of systems. In the view points of engineers and practitioners, however, there are still some major difficulties in using formal methods. In this paper, we introduce a new formal modeling language to fill the gaps between object-oriented programming languages (OOPLs) us...

Scha notes how Chomsky makes a sharp distinction between a formal grammar that defines the set of grammatical sentences in a language and the use of that language in a community, sloppiness and mistakes included. The former is usually referred to by Chomsky as “competence”, and the latter as “performance.” Scha then questions how useful this distinction is for contemporary natural language proc...
متن کاملA Formal Syntax of Natural Languages and the Deductive Grammar
Streszczenie. This paper presents a formal syntax framework of natural languages for computational linguistics. The abstract syntax of natural languages, particularly English, and their formal manipulations are described. On the basis of the abstract syntax, a universal language processing model and the deductive grammar of English are developed toward the formalization of Chomsky’s universal g...
متن کاملSyntagmatic Processes
Traditionally, syntagmatic processes refer to the influence of “horizontal” elements on a word or phrase, in contradistinction to paradigmatic processes, which refer to “vertical” or alternative substitutions in a phrase. The term had significant currency in early and mid-twentieth century linguistics from Saussure on, and helped to define the formal study of syntax as widely practiced today. T...
